Most Americans own firearms for self-defense, but every
day 58 people aim a gun at themselves and end their lives.
Suicides—including murder-suicides, where a gun, the overwhelming weapon
of choice, is used to take the lives of others first—are the leading cause of gun deaths
in the US each year. Of course not every suicide can be prevented, but nearly 90%
of people who survive attempts on their life do not go on to kill themselves.
Securing ALL guns in homes, easier access to professional health counseling, and distributing prevention materials at gun stores and firing ranges are proven ways to help save lives around the country.
